Summary

The NetBIOS and SMB protocols contain many implementation details that were not covered here. The main things to remember from this hour are

• NetBIOS offers three services to clients: a name service, a session service, and a datagram service.



• SMB is a connection-oriented service that uses the NetBIOS session service.



• A SMB connection requires three steps: negotiate the protocol level, establish a session connection, and establish a connection to a specific share.



• A workgroup name and a domain name are the same with regard to network browsing, but are different with respect to authentication models (see Figures 2.8 and 2.9)
