I thought it would be better to leave you with this point rather than bury it within an hour. If you are separated from other networks by a firewall and you do not want to allow clients on the outside of the firewall to access your internal SMB servers, make sure you block incoming ports 137, 138, and 139. This is especially true if you have users who like to share their entire hard disk because "it's so convenient!"
In Hour 7, you'll move on to the nitty-gritty of configuring the shares so that your users can actually access their files. Oh! I forgot to finish the story I started at the beginning of the hour, didn't I?
After spending a little less than an hour, I finished the last gulp of coffee (which was lukewarm by then) and headed off to find my boss. After explaining my decision to use encrypted passwords and defining a strategic plan--another Dilbert word--for migrating existing users to encrypted passwords fairly painlessly, she congratulated me on another job well done. She then signed a purchase order for a new laptop so I could stay in touch on my company-paid vacation. (It could happen!)
