The SMB protocol supports two modes of connection authentication. Samba supports both share-mode and user-mode security. In addition, Samba offers two other variations on user-level security: server and domain.
You can use either plain-text passwords or encrypted passwords in all the security options in Samba. Plain-text passwords are validated against the standard UNIX account database, /etc/passwd (or the network equivalent). Password encryption however, requires that Samba keep a separate file containing the password encryption hashes.
