plain-text equivalent password These are generated when the encryption algorithm used always generates the same byte string given the same input. In other words, a password always encrypts to the same value. Obtaining the encrypted version of the password enables an intruder to successfully take part in the challenge/response authentication scheme used by SMB servers such as Samba and Windows NT.
