Symbolic Links

By default, Samba follows symlinks in the UNIX file system that are contained within the shared directory tree, but doesn't follow symlinks to files/directories outside that directory.

Two share-level parameters control this behavior. They are follow symlinks and wide links.

By default, they are set to yes and no respectively.

Setting follow symlinks to no stops all symlinks being followed, with some slight loss in performance.

Setting wide links to yes allows links outside the shared directory tree to be followed.
